(a) Explain two physical and two human factors which may favour a rapid growth of population

(b) Outline five problems that may arise from the rapid growth of population

Explanation

(a) Two physical factors which may attract or favour a rapid growth of population are:

(i) Favourable climate: This leads to dense population, e.g temperate regions like U.K. U.S.A Japan tend to have increased population because of good climate

(ii) Fertile soils. Fertile soils attract population, e.g fertile alluvial soil in the deltas of South East Asia, River Nile in Egypt have attracted dense population.

Two human factors which may favour a rapid growth of population are:

(i) Commercial activities, Commercial activities like heavy trading centres, and presence of ports are closely associated with population concentration

(ii) Mining activities. Mining activities in areas where minerals are available tend to attract high concentration of people.

(b) Five problems that may arise from rapid growth of population include:

(i) Accommodation problem

(ii) Transportation problem

(iii) High pressure on existing social amenities

(iv) High level of crimes

(v) Traffic congestion
