Two functions f and g are defined on the set of real numbers by \(f : x \to x^{2} + 1\) and \(g : x \to x - 2\). Find f o g.

  • A. \(x^{2} + 4x - 5\)
  • B. \(x^{2} - 4x + 5\)
  • C. \(x^{2} - 1\)
  • D. \(x - 1\)

Correct Answer: B. \(x^{2} - 4x + 5\)

Explanation

\(f(x) = x^{2} + 1\) and \(g(x) = x - 2\)

\(f o g = f(g(x)) = f(x - 2) = (x - 2)^{2} + 1 \)

= \(x^{2} - 4x + 4 + 1 = x^{2} - 4x + 5\)
