Describe the Warm Temperate, Western Margin climate (Mediterranean type) under the following headings:

(a) location; (b) climatic characteristics (c) vegetation; (d) human activities.

Warm Temperate Western Margin (Mediterranean Type)

(a) Location

— It is confined to the Western portion of continental masses.

— It is found between latitudes 30° and 45° North and South of the equator.

— South West of South Africa, North Africa (Tunisia, Morroco, Libya), central Chile, Southern California, Mediterranean. Europe (France, Spain, Italy) and Southern Western Australia.

(b) Climatic Characteristics

— A dry warm summer of temperature between 21°C to 27°C.

— Bright sunny weather with hot, dry summer and wet mild winter.

— Four seasons, winter temp. never below 0°,(5°C-6°C)

— Humidity high in winter and low in summer

— It has abundance of rainfall in winter

— Mean rainfall of 600 - 900mm.

— There is prominence of local winds around the Mediterranean Sea such as sirocco and mistral.

(c) Vegetation

— There is the prominence of evergreen conferous forest such as pines, firs and cedars.

— The dominant vegetation is evergreen woodland such as oak eucalyptus plants.

— Presence of Mediterranean bushes and scrubs such as acacia, laurel, rosemary and marquis.

— Presence of grasses.

(d) Human Activities

— Orchard Farming: Wide range of fruits such as orange, lemon, resin, apricot, olive, etc are grown

— Viticulture: People here are known for growing grape fruits.

— Crop Production Such as wheat, rice using irrigation.

— Livestock Farming: Especially transhumance.

— Production of Pulps and paper from soft woods

— Wine Production

— Fruit Canning.
