Write a geographical account of Tropical Grasslands under the following headings:

(a) Location;

(b) Climatic factors affecting the distribution;

(c) Vegetation characteristics

Explanation

Tropical Grasslands

(a) Location: Tropical grasslands are located between latitudes 5° and 20° North and South of the Equator. It can be found in the following areas

(a) Central America

(b) North West of South America

(c) Interior of Brazil

(d) Interior of West Africa

(e) Parts of East Africa, South East Asia, and Northern Australia.

(b) Climatic Factors Affecting the Distribution

(1) Has high monthly temperature of about 27°cm

(2) High temperature range, up to 11°C

(3) Annual rainfall of about 600 1500mm.

(4) Seasonal rainfall with single maximum

(5) Summer rainfall, winter dryness

(6) Humidity is high during the rainy season

(7) More than 60% during the rains and above 40% during the dry season

(c) Vegetation Characteristics

(i) The dominant vegetation cover is grass

(ii) Presence of tall grasses with fibrous roots

(iii) Presence of short scattered trees

(iv) The trees are deciduous

(v) Trees have large trunks to store water for the dry period

(vi) Trees includes Baobab, Acacia etc.

(vii) Majority of trees have rough, thick and thorny barks

(viii) Grasses are succulent

(ix) Example of grass is the elephant grass.
