Explanation

(a) THE TERM SETTLEMENT:- Settlement is a group of buildings with people living in them. It could be rural or urban. A settlement may cover small area or may be several square kilometres. Settlement may be nucleated or disperse. that is may differ in shape and pattern.

(b) CHARACTERISTICS OF AN URBAN SETTLEMENT.

(1) It is densely populated and performs both secondary and tertiary functions

(2) It possesses plenty of social amenities

(3) Heterogeneous population

(4) It is usually compact

(5) Usually centre of innovation and ideas

(6) Different languages and culture

(7) Impersonal behaviour/individualistic behaviour.

(c) FUNCTIONS AN URBAN SETTLEMENT CAN PERFORM FOR RURAL SETTLEMENT

(a) Administrative

(b) Provision of employment

(c) Source of manufactured goods

(d) Education

(e) Commercial

(f) Medical/health service

(g) Recreation
