Contrast the Sokoto Plains with the Eastern highlands under the following headings

(a) relief and drainage

(b) resources and human activities

Sokoto plainEastern highlands

(a) Relief and drainage

The relief is a lowland of less than 30m. Broken up by rivers Sokoto and Rima and their tributaries and their areas is usually flooded during the rainy season

There are chains of hills along eastern border of Nigeria e.g Mambila, Biu Plateaux, Alantika, Shebshi mountains, Adamawa plateau. They range in altitude between 600m and 200m. The rivers that flow within this zone are Benue, Gongola, Taraba, kano, etc.

(b) Resources and human activities

Minerals found are limestone, gold, phosphate and gypsum. They are also involved in farming and rearing of cattle, sheep and goat, Industries are cement and local crafts

Presence of minerals like limestone, iron ore and uranium. They are involved in agriculture, e.g cultivation of tea, coffee, yam, cassava, cattle, goat, sheep, etc and few industries like cement and textile.

(c) Problems of development

(i) Inadequate supply of rainfall (ii) Desert encroachment due to activities of man (ii) Extensive land make communication very difficult

(i) Rugged relief causes remoteness and poor development of transportation

(ii) Problem of soil erosion and severe flooding

(iii) Cimatic variation due'to rainfall in some areas and none in other areas
