(a) What is Paul's advice in his Epistle to the Romans, on the use of individual talents?

(b) Identify three functions of spiritual gifts.

Explanation

(a) Paul's advice in his Epistle to the Romans, on the use of individual talents, is that as the body consists of many members which perform different functions, so individual talents are for different functions. Paul reminds the Romans that though they are many, yet they are one body in Christ. People should not be arrogant because of their talents. Individually, they are members of one another, so individual talents should be used to help one another. Though, gifts may differ according to the grace given to them, they must use the gifts for the benefit of the community / church. The person who has the gift of prophecy should use it in proportion to his faith, while those who serve should serve faithfully, Those who teach or exhort should do so faithfully and effectively, for the benefit of the church. He who contributes, should do so liberally, while he who gives aid, must do so with zeal. With the belief that acts of mercy should be done with cheerfulness.

(b) Functions of Spiritual gifts are:

(i) They are meant for the good of the entire community / church.

(ii) They are to promote good relationship among Christians in the community of faith.

(iii) To help the church to remain united.

(iv) They are given to the church to glorify God.
