Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 2 and 3x - 2y = 1

  • A. x = 2 and y = 1
  • B. x = 1 and y = 1
  • C. x = 1 and y = 2
  • D. x = -1 and y = 1

Correct Answer: B. x = 1 and y = 1

Explanation

x + y = 2........... (i)

3x - 2y = 1......(ii)

From (i): x = 2 - y ..........(iii)

subt. (2 - y) for x in (ii)

3(2 - y) 2y = 1

6 - 3y - 2y = 1

-5y = 1 - 6 = -5

y = \(\frac{-5}{-5}\) = 1

subst. (i) for y in (iii)

x = 2 - 1 = 1

x = 1, y = 1
