(a) Outline any three features of a Written Constitution.

(b) Highlight any three reasons for the adoption of a Unitary Constitution.

Explanation

(a) Features of a written constitution are:

(i) It is contained in a single document.

(ii) It begins with a preamble /introduction.

(iii) It spells out the procedure for its amendment

(iv) It contains Fundamental Human Rights of the citizens.

(v) It clarifies the duties and powers of each organ of government.

(vi) It is often rigid in nature.

(vii) It stipulates the type of government to be adopted.

(viii) It defines the type of party system to be adopted.

(ix) It defines how citizenship is acquired.

(x) It defines the structure of public and civil service.

(b) Reasons for the adoption of a unitary constitution are:

(i) The size of the country — if the land mass is small.

(ii) Absence of marked ethnic or tribal differences.

(iii) Absence of serious fear of domination by different sections of the country

(iv) Common language and culture.

(v) If the population of the country is small.

(vi) Lack of marked economic inequalities among different sections of the country.

(vii) Limited human and natural resources.

(viii) Encouragement of national consciousness and cohesion.
