Explanation

The demands of the nationalist movements in British West Africa in the 1920s had the following outlook:

(i) They wanted to be involved in the government of their country.

(ii) They wanted an end to colonialism with its attendant evil consequences.

(iii) They demanded a total overhaul of the civil service, claiming that top posts in the service should also go to them and should not be an exclusive preserve of the whites.

(iv)The economy of their country, they claimed, should be in the hands of West Africans

(v) They demanded the rights to vote and be voted for in virtually all elections.

(vi)They denounced racism, which was a major factor in government appointments.

(vii)They demanded a reduction in the heavy taxation on Africans and asked for the right of Africans to control the money realised from this taxation.

(viii)They agitated for a stoppage to poor prices paid for African agricultural products.

(ix)They demanded that the colonialists should stop all chieftaincy appointments and deposition.

(x) They wanted an African legislative council.
