Which of the following species determines the chemical properties of an atom?

  • A. Electron
  • B. Neutron
  • C. Nucleus
  • D. Proton

Correct Answer: A. Electron

The answer is "D" and not "A" and these are my reasons. If valence electron is the one that determines the chemical properties of an atom, Sodium ion, magnesium ion and aluminium ion would have the same chemical properties since they now have no electron in their outermost shell but no, they still maintain their chemical properties of the respective groups which is due to the unchanged proton number
